What is Vector Audio?
Vector Audio™ is a proposed digital audio framework that represents music as performance data, instrument and vocal models, and scene descriptions rather than fixed PCM samples. At playback time, a render engine synthesizes the final audio in real time, allowing content to improve as models, devices, and listening environments evolve.
Instead of a single frozen “recording,” Vector Audio describes how a performance is played and how it should sound, making it possible to adapt to new devices, rooms, and creative contexts without re-recording or remastering.
Specification
Vector Audio Specification (VASP) v0.1 — Draft
The initial version of the Vector Audio Specification is currently in development and is being shared publicly for discussion and feedback.
Goals
- Define a model-based audio format that is resolution-independent and future-proof.
- Preserve performance expressivity at a deeper level than MIDI or traditional project files.
- Support adaptive playback based on device, room, and listener preferences.
- Enable upgradeable masters as models and render engines improve over time.
- Provide a structured path for human–AI collaboration in music creation and playback.
Participate
Vector Audio™ is intended to be an open, collaborative effort involving audio developers, researchers, musicians, producers, hardware makers, and streaming platforms.
